(Login required) The Fair Work Ombudsman recently updated the Fair Work Information Statement (FWIS) following the recent Supreme Court decision on the imputation and acceptance of salary increases for leave of persons/guardians In 2017, teachers will receive an increase of 2.3%, followed by increases of 2.5% in 2018, 2019 and 2020. The Union considers that the increase in wages is a good result for members of the current economic environment where inflation is low. REFUND The 2.3% salary increase will start at the beginning of the first salary period after February 1, 2017. In clause 5(d) on p9, teachers MEA expressly provides that the difference between the 2017 MEA rate and the rate actually received by the teacher during that period (i.e. the additional payment) must be paid as soon as possible after the start of the new MEA. HOLIDAYS/PERSONAL TUTORS The new personal/supervisory leave schemes for teachers will start in early 2017, including a one-off credit of 15 days of leave and a progressive charge of 15 days per year, without limitation (see clause 18.2 and 18.3 of the MEA for transitional provisions). Special leave of one day per year will now also be available to fulfill a planned family obligation, at which the date is beyond the teacher`s control. Proof of illness is subject to new, more flexible rules – no proof is required for the first three days of personal leave in a calendar year. In case of absence after the first three days, in case of bodily injury or illness, a teacher may only be asked to present a medical certificate for an absence of two consecutive days or more; But in case of absence due to a personal emergency or domestic violence, the teacher must provide proof for each missing day.
